TEXAS COSMETOLOGY LICENSES INFORMATION

ITo obtain a cosmetology license, Texas cosmetology students must meet several requirements.  The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is the regulatory agency in charge of issuing cosmetology and barbering licenses. Texas offers licenses for cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist, esthetician and manicurist, wig specialist, hair weaving specialist, class A barber, barber technician, barber/manicurist barber, technician/manicurist, barber technician/hair weaving, hair braiding specialist and eyelash extension specialist.

To apply for a cosmetology license, you must be at least 17 years old and have obtained a high school diploma or GED.  You must complete:

  • 1500 hours in a beauty school (or)
  • 1000 hours in a beauty school and 500 hours of high school related programs in a vocational or career and technical public school (or) 
  • 300 hours of cosmetology in a training program approved by the commission and hold a class A barber certificate.

In TEXAS, you have to be at least 16 years old to apply for a cosmetology license. Additionally, you must complete 1200 school hours in a cosmetology education program.  Remember to choose a school with courses that are approved by the Board of Cosmetology of TEXAS. It is not a “must” to hold a high school diploma or GED. Once the previous conditions are met, you will have to pass the cosmetology license examination which consists of a written and a practical examination.  Specialties do not require examination. TEXAS also requires applicants to submit the HIV/AIDS course completion certificate received from their school.
